Overview

Design Intent

CONFLUX is a bar stool exploring the dialogue between advanced manufacturing and traditional Indian craft. The project investigates how contemporary material processes—cast aluminum, CNC precision—can coexist with centuries-old rattan weaving techniques practiced across India. The design creates a visual and material conversation: organic metal branching evokes natural growth while honoring the structural logic of traditional Indian furniture, and handwoven rattan brings tactile warmth rooted in craft lineages.

How to create furniture that feels simultaneously forward-looking and culturally grounded?

Modern furniture often abandons craft traditions in pursuit of industrial efficiency, while traditional Indian furniture can feel disconnected from contemporary material possibilities. The challenge was designing a bar stool that merges these worlds—where advanced manufacturing provides structural precision and traditional handcraft provides surface warmth and cultural continuity. The integration needed to feel intentional, not decorative—where each material and process serves both function and meaning, creating cohesion rather than contrast.

Solution

The design employs a solid walnut base transitioning into cast aluminum branches that fan upward like stylized tree forms, referencing organic motifs common in Indian craft traditions. The branching structure creates anchor points for traditional rattan weaving—a craft practiced across Indian furniture-making for generations. Natural woven rattan integrates directly into the aluminum framework through tension weaving, requiring no mechanical fasteners. The cone-to-branch transition echoes traditional Indian turned wood bases while using contemporary materials. Brushed, polished, or mirror aluminum finishes allow the metal to shift from subdued to statement, while the rattan maintains tactile warmth and craft authenticity. The result is a bar stool functioning as cultural bridge—where futuristic form and traditional making create furniture that honors heritage while embracing material innovation.
